Nightjar chicks also demonstrate camouflage, but not in the same way as their parents. It has been speculated that these little guys demonstrate masquerade by resembling an ‘uninteresting’ object. In this case, chicks can look remarkably like certain seed pods.
Sometimes, when the chicks feel directly threatened, they will extend their necks and open their mouth wide. It is suggested that this behaviour may be an attempt to resemble a snake to deter predators.
